Holly, if you will fly to a third country or region rather than the last one you departed after stopping in Shanghai, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit there.

Great! We are starting in Orlando - then Hong Kong - then Tokyo - then Shanghai - then Orlando. So we should be good? The 144 hours doesn't start until the day after arrival? Also - we are staying with friends while we are there. I noticed on the website that it talks about if you are staying at a hotel they will register you. It also mentions to go to the police station to register if you are not staying at a hotel. Does anyone have experience with this?

Dear, the travel route is fine and the 144 hours starts from the 00:00 of the day following your arrival.
You need to go to the local police station to register your accommodation or your friend can go there to do it for you. The required materials include your passport, the household registration book of your friend and other relevant documents.
