Visa for transit through Beijing

Hello, my friend is from Germany. He is going to Beijing for a month and then leaving China to travel in SE Asia countries. In order to save money, he is thinking to book a return tickets from Germany to Beijing. For a month stay in PRC, he will definitely apply a Chinese visa which can stay up to 30 days. He is planing to get a flight back to Beijing from Bangkok but with different airline. Does he need a visa for this entry? Because of different airline, he may need to get his luggage at the arrival hall and do the check in again.

Dear, you mean he will fly to Beijing from Bangkok, and then fly to Germany after transiting in Beijing? If yes and he stays in Beijing for less than 72 hours, no entry permit is required because he is eligible for the 72 hour free transit.
And he can collect his luggage and then he needs to check in again.
