As far as I know, many people applied for the F type to do intern in China in the past. But it seems the policy has changed somehow, the interns are required to apply for M or Z type. If you plan to do the intern for not more than three months, you can apply for the M type. If you want to stay for longer time, you can apply for Z type.

To apply for the M type, the company should send you an invitation letter. To apply for the Z type, the company should help you to obtain an invitation letter from a duly authorized unit and an alien work permit.

F type is issued to those who are invited to PRC for exchanges, visits, study tours and other activities. It is usually valid for 3 months with stay duration of 30 days.
