Question about return to China

I overstayed my student visa by less than 30 days in July 2015 and when I went to pay the fine and show my airplane ticket leaving the next day, they sent me to a 32 day detention center anyways. Then they sent me back to my home country, for which I had to pay for a new ticket all over again. When they brought me to the airport to leave the agent told me I could return within one year. Is this information correct?
