About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I want to go outside Terminal Three and smoke

Do I need a transit visa? How long does it take to process one? I have four and a half hour layover.

Don, if you only transit in China for less than 24 hours, you can use the 24-hour free transit policy. You may need to apply for a temporary stay permit at the immigration counter and it takes only a few minutes.

As it turned out, Carlos, yes a 24 hr. visa is necessary, but requires hours not minutes. The information booth said no way...I asked...I looked....too many people.
