z visa, working permit and residence permit

i have all the valid z type, also my company helped me apply for residence permit and working permit, i have got it all but there is a problem the company is inisisting on keeping my working permit, is it okay and if i leave china and try to visit my home country then do i need to show them the working permit or just residence permit is fine ? please let me know
