About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Inform carrier

1. It is necessary to inform the carrier before you arrive, so that they can declare your request to the immigration office for processing.

I am flying with Aeroflot from Almaty, Kazakhstan, to Shanghai via Moscow. Should I inform Aeroflot in Almaty or wait until I get to Moscow. Do I inform them when I board the plane or at the check-in desk? Aeroflot themselves do not seem to know at what I need to do at the moment.

What happens if the airline does not inform the immigration office and I arrive to Shanghai? Will I still be able to get the 144 hour transit visa?

Hi there! You should inform the carrier when you board the plane in Moscow.
As long as you inform the airline that you want to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai, they will declare your request to Shanghai airport immigration inspection office. After you get off, you can apply for the free transit there.

If you do not inform the immigration office, it may also be fine. You can still probably get the free transit. But just to be safe, you are advised to inform it in advance.

I had no issues with Aeroflot last weekend. I just should the ticket agent I was doing a transit in Shanghai and showed my outgoing flights to Seoul. Once in Shanghai, I had to enter the normal immigration line since the 72/144 hour lines were closed. The immigration officials were great, they asked us to wait 10 minutes until midnight so they could give us an extra day for our TWOV stamps. It was a very simple process.
