Can I apply for a tourist visa if I will be in China for 10 weeks working with an organization?

I am a student and will be working with an organization over the summer for 10 weeks. I have my tickets, and they are providing me a place to stay. They told me to apply for a tourist visa-and gave me the address of a hotel (that I won't be staying at...) In addition, I hope to travel. They have not supplied me with a formal letter of invitation, nor have they sent me any information on where I will stay....

Jillian, considering your situation, you’d better apply for an F type. You can ask the organization to issue an invitation letter to you and then provide other required documents including your passport and copy of its data page, the application form. After that, submit your application to the consulate general to apply for it.
