You are advised to apply for it one month earlier before you travel. After you submit your application, it usually takes 4 working days to process it.0

Usually it takes 4 days. however you can pay extra to get 3 days, and even next day. As long as you got the visa , you can enter China. So while it is safe to get it a month in advance, you can get it a few days in advance.0
