long layover in zhengzhou, can i visit the city?

I am a US citizen. If I have a long layover,  do I need a transit visa in advance? Can I go and visit the city while I wait for my next flight?

But how long is your layover? According to the regulation, as long as it is within 24 hours, you are eligible for the 24h visa-free transit. Under this circumstance, just apply for a stay permit at the immigration counter after landing. With the permit, you can leave the airport and have a visit in the city.
