About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

From one country and back

Can I get the 144hr visa if I leave Japan and then come back to Japan after my stay in Shanghai?

Greg, you can't use this policy if your country of departure is the same with your next destination after the transit.

Vivian, that doesn't sound true. I think the main thing is just having an onward ticket to show when arriving in China. I don't think it matters if the ticket is back to the place you left from, i.e., Tokyo-Shanghai Pudong-Tokyo. I think they just want you to clear out after 144 hours, regardless of where that is to, as long as it's out of China.

According to the requirements, the route Tokyo - Shanghai - Tokyo is not qualified. You have to fly to a third country or region.
