About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

Which visas we should apply for?

Hi,
My friend and I (both Swiss) plan to go travelling in China and South Korea this summer (and would like to visit Hong Kong and Taiwan as well) and have some trouble figuring out which entry permit to get and if our travel plans are even possible. Our situation is as follows:
From the beginning of May to the middle of June I (alone) plan to go to PRC and attend a language school. The school has confirmed that they would help me get an entry permit and send an invitation. So, I could get an F-type, right?
Then around the middle of June, my friend would come to PRC as well and we would travel first around PRC for 6 weeks and then South Korea for 4 weeks. Then, at the beginning of September, we would both fly back to Switzerland.

That was our initial plan. But then my friend read that she would only be able to get an entry permit with 30-day duration. If she wanted to stay longer, she would have to get a multiple entry one, which are harder to get. Additionally, if I got the F-type, would it only be valid until I've finished my school or could I also go travel with it? If not, could I get another entry permit right after the first one? And another issue is the fact that we would like to arrive and depart from the same airport for our cross-continental flight because it is cheaper. However, this would mean another entry to PRC, which could be solved with the 72-hour transit, though, right?
In fact, we also played through a few other options (like doing 4 weeks PRC first, then go to South Korea for 4 weeks and the finish the remaining 2 weeks in PRC again). But things just got even more complicated. And finally I decided to post our problem here in hopes someone might be able to help me clear things up.
Already many thanks in advance!

Hi there! First, I think you should get an X type for the language school at the beginning. Usually, the allowed stay duration of the X type depends on the length of the study program. So you can negotiate with the school and see whether it can grant a longer term on the invitation letter for you. If it agrees to do so, you many use this X type to stay unitl you leave. If it disagress, it's ok. You can extend your X type or convert it to an L type at the local exit and entry administration before it expires. Your friend can do the same in order to stay longer. I don't think you need to apply for the double or multiple-entry permit.

Hi Nancy, thank you for your answer! I guess this whole issue is less difficult than I initially thought it to be. So, I can always go to the local exit bureau, ask them for an extension of my current type and it will always get granted? That'd be really great though, of course.
And I will check with the school about the duration of the X type.
Thank you!

Hi Katharina, to be honest, I cannot say you will surely get the extension each time you apply for it, but as you hold a Swiss passport, I think you have a big chance.
