Do the travelers have to be present at the Chinese consulate for Visa Applications

I am sending my son (14 years old) and my nephew (19 years old) to China to visit my Chinese exchange student. We are US citizens. Do you know if the boys have to be present at the Chinese consulate in New York City when I bring the applications there or can I bring the applications myself?

Monica, the travelers don’t have to go there physically. You can bring the applications there and apply for them.
