About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK-Abu Dhabi-Shanghai-UK. Can I use 72/144 free transit

I am travelling to Abu Dhabi on business, and have the opportunity for a brief family visit in Shanghai, before returning to UK. I am travelling on a British passport. Could I take advantage of the 72 or 144 free transit?
