About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Chicago-Guangzhou (change plane at Beijing)-Taipei-Guangzhou (change plane at Beijing)-Chicago

From Chicago to Taipei (destination) round trip, I would like to meet my friend who lives in Guangzhou for 2 days either on the way to Taipei or on the way back to Chicago. I assume I can apply free 72 hour visa for stay in Guangzhou. Or it need to be done in Beijing on the way to Taipei?

You can't use the 72h twov as you have 2 stops in China in both directions.
