As far as I know, Hua Mulan was originally an ordinary girl like others. The safety along the state's border was disturbed by the northern nomads at that time. To strengthen the army, every family was required to send a man to the troop, or the whole family members would be killed. Her father was old and sickly and his brother was too young to fight. So, she dressed as a man and joined the army. When the war ended, her great achievements were praised by the emperor.
There is no record of her love life and which martial art she was capable of. But, she must work very hard in learning Kung Fu in the barrack. Or, she won't have achieved such a great contribution.
