Why is the cat not a Chinese zodiac sign?

I want to know! My whole life I have been 'engulfed in cats' you might say. I love cats, horses not as much. Though they are cool, cats are way better. I just don't know why I can't have a cat as my animal.

there is a story about that. the animals had to race and whoever was first got to be the first animal and so on. the cat was lazy so he told the rat to wake him up when the race was bout to start but the rat forgot so when the cat woke up it was to late to join the race.
