Do we need a visa for transit in Beijing?

Me and my partner have booked to go to Australia in the summer. We have return flights from London to Sydney via Beijing. We have booked a 4 night hotel in Beijing to break up the long flight.

Will we need an entry permit for 4 nights at Beijing?
