About:Policy for Foreigners with Immediate Family Living in China

Any Option for Visa/Residence Permit for Taking Care of My Child AND Working in Order to Do So?

My 4-year old boy is Chinese, as his mother is Chinese. I am now divorced. I am still in PRC and take care of my son who stays with me most of the year.

For the past several years I've been here on "visiting family" types, which have each allowed for either a 6 month duration of stay or, more lately, a single entry permit allowing for two 180-day durations of stay provided that I exit (i.e. to HK) and return at the end of the first 180 days.

It is great that a Family Visitors Residence Permit is available, if it is of any longer duration and more cost effective than entry permits. However, what I would really hope for is the legal right to work here on the basis of needing to be here to take care of my child. I really don't think many foreigners who must take care of a Chinese child in PRC for years are financially capable of NOT working during that time. Given the massive responsibility of parenting and my bond with my child, I certainly don't want my ability to stay in PRC to be contingent upon the whims of some employer (i.e. on a Work Z type) who could terminate me or go out of business at any moment.

AC, you should note that you cannot work in PRC with your current family type. You have to apply for a work Z type and then you can work there.

Yes, I am aware of that. That is the dilemma I am talking about.
