when can we apply for our visas ?

we are going end of June so can we only apply so many days in advance? We are all travelling together so would we get a group type or is it more straightforward to get 4 individual ones, we are all Adults. Do we have to all go to the Chinese Embassy or can we take copies of our sons passports and hand them all in together?
