About:China Visa Application Procedure and Fee

One day visit to Shanghai

My wife and I will be visiting Shanghai, arriving by cruise ship at 8 am and leaving by cruise ship that same day before 6 pm. Do we have to go through the process of getting visa when we just stay in Shanghai for the ten hours? All we have time for is a museum, a shops walk and a juicy Peking duck lunch.
Can we get a 12-hour entry permit at the port customs, like you can when in transit at the airport? That would be good. Thank you for your friendly reply.

Fred, you can enjoy the 24-hour direct transit policy. To go out of the airport, you can simply apply for a temporary stay permit at the immigration counter and the officer will stamp on your passport. Then you will be permitted to leave.

Hi Judi.
Thank you for replying to my query. The thing is, we travel by ship and do not arrive at the airport. I read that travelers who fly to Shanghai can get a free visum at the airport. But we do not get to the airport at all. We arrive and leave at Shanghai seaport. So I want to know whether we can get at the seaport a free visum just for a one-day stay.
Kind regards, Fred

HI,
I think we might be doing the same cruise. I can't seem to get a straight answer. I'm going to phone the consulate later today. Cunard said yes we do but didn't seem too certain. The travel agent isn't too sure either...can never get them on the phone and take forever to answer an email.
Cheers
Mary

Hi Judi and Mary
Our travel agent (she's excellent!) called Princes Cruises for an answer to my query about entry permits for one-day visits to China Mainland (excl HK) arriving and leaving by ship. We need to get entry permits in advance. Princess Cruises sent the rolling email.

CHINA VISA REQUIREMENT EN No: 14 16OCT14
A single-entry permit is required for all guests on this voyage. This must be obtained in advance of your voyage, cannot be obtained upon arrival and is required regardless of whether you choose to remain onboard or go ashore. Single-entry permits are valid for 90 days from the date of issue. Based on when you apply for your entry permit, you may want to consider obtaining a double-entry permit which is valid for six months from the date of issue. When applying for your entry permit, please include a copy of your booking confirmation which includes your cruise itinerary. Failure to include this document with your application may result in significant delays in processing your application or denial of the application.

The requirements can change at any time. Princess Cruises does not set the requirements, nor are we advised when changes are made. As such, we recommend that you confirm current requirements at visa advisory company direct.
