If i don't want to visit the temples, i just want to enter the city center, do i have to pay the fee anyway? Someone said i should ignore the guards because the entrance into the ancient city is free...

I went there last Mar. Although it is regulated that all visitors entering the town should pay CNY148, I was not asked to show ticket by guards when getting from the West Gate; neither did other tourists. So this is the case. However, my friends coming back from there in Oct. said the entrance ticket was strict. My suggestion is that you have a try on the spot. Good luck!
