Robin, according to what you said, I think your kids need to apply for a transit G type or tourist L type to PRC in advance of their trip. Because they will stop in two Chinese, the 72 hour free transit is not applicable; and their total layover time in PRC is more than 24 hours, they cannot enjoy the 24 hour direct transit either. In this case, they have to apply for PRC visa.

It's Robin again:) kids are now in Phuket. And don't have an entry permit. If they don't leave the airport while in PRC are they ok? Any ideas? If they need one, where do they go? Thanx again for all of the help

They need the entry permit even though they don’t leave the airport. They can apply for it at the CVASC in Thailand. They can apply for a transit G type directly. The required documents include the passport and its copy, the application form and a passport-style photo, valid entry permit to Thailand, as well as the confirmed tickets.
