About:Beijing Great Wall

Quick trip to Mutianyu from Beijing

I will be staying at Lee Garden Apartments near Oriental Plaza 1 - 4 April. I am from Australia and speak or read no Chinese. I would like to take a quick tour to the wall- start early, drive to the cable car, spend an hour on wall, toboggan down and picked up by my waiting driver and back to apartment.
Any ideas? I want a driver who speaks English.

If this is possible, cost please? OR, can I organize this from my apartment or a tourist office nearby?

Hope you can help. Chris

Chris, you can hire a driver and car to visit the wall. The rental is from CNY 500 to 600. You can try to bargain with the driver if he charges more. However, I personally suggest you might join one-day tour arranged by a qualified tour agency. It costs around USD 70 to 100. In this way, you needn't worry that you might meet an unprofessional driver.

Thanks Robin. How do I get the driver? Will concierge at my apartments help? The reason for a driver over a tour is I will be going 4 April - a national holiday - and I would like an early start & finish. Furthermore, a lot of people complain that the tour operators "add on" places to stop. I just want to get to wall, have a brief walk(less than an hour) & come home. Ideally I'd like to do Mutianyu before the crowds.
Thanks so much Robin - Cheers, Chris

Chris, I think the risk is the same. Yes, the tour operators might "add on" places as you said. However, if you meet an unreliable driver, he might increase the price on the way too. If you don't have any friend there, you can ask if the concierge help you find a driver.

Actually, the section you are going to visit is less crowded than other sections. Many foreigners like you finished their trips alone by taking public buses. It's time-consuming (more than half a day) but not as difficult as you thought.
