hi, i want to cancel my study visa as i am finishing schoolreturning home.

Can I cancel it when I depart at airport immigration? Or must I change it to a L type before leaving?

You really needn't do that. You can return home without cancellation. It will automatically void when it expires. By the way, the immigration at the airport can't cancel your X type.
