Applying for a "Z" Visa outside of the US?

Hi,
I'm an American citizen currently working outside of the US. (in Costa Rica) I have been offered a teaching position in China and the school has already sent documents to present at the Chinese embassy. Can I present and apply for the temporary Z type here in Costa Rica and not back in the US? I have legal working residence here in Costa Rica. Since the Chinese embassy is very near here in Costa Rica I wish to do it here and not back in the US where I would have to send my documents to Houston, Texas. Can I proceed with my application here in Costa Rica or must I apply for them back in the US?

Also my wife will accompany me to PRC, How does she apply for the S1 type? at the same time as I apply for my Z type and what documents must she present and what must I do on my behalf to help here get the S1 type?

I would appreciate any information that can help.

Dear, you can apply for it at the embassy of PRC in Costa Rica. You don’t have to go back to US for your application.
As for your wife’s S1 type, you can ask your employer to put your wife’s name on the invitation letter from the duly authorized unit as well. In this way, your wife can apply for S1 type and accompany you to PRC. She needs to provide her passport, the application form with a passport-sized color photo glued, her residence permit or valid entry permit to Costa Rica as well as your marriage certificate. I think you should also provide your passport to help her get S1 type.

Hi Jeff,
Just wondering how it went for you, if you were able to obtain your Z visa from the embassy in Costa Rica and if you had any problems.
