Transit Visa Shanghai of Passport Expiration is May 2016?

My US passport expires 23. May 2016. We will travel to Taiwan.
We will enter Shanghai on 25.January for 24 hours and again on 15. February for 24 hours.

Usually a US passports needs to at least be valid more than 6 months.

Does that count for a transit visa too?
