I think you should apply for a Chinese tourist type or F type in advance. To apply for the tourist type, you should provide round-trip air tickets and hotel booking in mainland PRC beside your passport, application form and passport photo. If the marathon host can send you an invitation letter, then you needn't be bothered by air tickets and hotel booking.
