The following documents are required including the passport and copy of its data page, the application form, a recently-taken color passport photo, an Invitation Letter for Tourist from Chinese Tourist Bureau, travel itinerary, as well as bank statement within the latest 3 months. There is no exact amount of how many money you should have in the bank account. But considering your situation, I think the more, the better.

I'm sorry. You cannot. The invitation letter is a must.
