24 Hour TWOV - Leave the airport for sightseeing

Hi,

I am traveling from Houston to Mumbai via Beijing with a layover of 15 hours on an Indian Passport. I am planning to leave the airport for sightseeing and I hear that I need to apply for a stay permit at the airport to do so but when I tried to confirm this with Air China customer care, they said this would be handled at the airport and depending on the person at the counter, it might be approved/denied. I read somewhere that there is a special lane and that is the only lane that handles these type of situations at the Immigration counter in the airport. I would really appreciate if someone could explain in detail about this. Thanks.

Sri, you are eligible for the 24 hour TWOV and if you want to leave the airport, you need to apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport. Usually, you will get it. But there may be other circumstances. You can have a try.
If you are still worried, you can contact with Beijing Airport Immigration Inspection and confirm it. The hot line is 0086-10-56095400.
Generally speaking, there is a pecial lane in airport set up for 72 hour free transit, but no special lane for 24h free transit. You can handle relevant procedures of 24 hour TWOV at the immigration counter directly.
