Shanghai trip for American expats

Hello,

We are planning a trip to Shanghai in January 2016. We are American expats living in South Korea. Our trip is less than 72 hours but it is not a stopover. Seoul to Shanghai and return.

Do we need visas?? About how much would they cost if this is our first trip to China?
