If you still hold valid HK Permanent ID card, I think you can come back as a resident. Otherwise, you should come as a US citizen.

I was told by an attorney online that I may not be able to do so. I came as a sponsored immigrant in 1972 when I just turned 7 years old. The Hong KOng attorney said if I do not have a HOng kong birth certificate , proof I gone to school there Kingergarten and 1st grade, then I will not be able to live there as a resident. I think that is riduclous. I do not have my green card since I turned it over when I got my U.S. citizenship in 1987. My passport and naturalization certificate does say that I came from Hong KOng, China. I cannot believe HOng Kong governement is so stuck up. They should be happy that I want to return and live there and prehaps create local jobs....... Yes, I want to start a small business there.
