About:Chinese Greetings

I recently made an embarrassing mistake in a salutation.

I used a very respectful male salutation to an important Chinese business contact who turns out is female! I have had many past business dealings with this person but we have never met. I want to humbly and very respectfully apologize for my ignorance of this persons gender, and fix this embarrassing situation so we may continue to have a healthy business relationship.

Please let me know how to to this with english charactors not chinese.

Thank you very much!!

Mkline, it was a big mistake. Did you address her Chinese name? If so, it's understandable that you didn't realize she was female. It's too difficult for a foreigner who doesn't learn Chinese to tell a person's gender with his/her name.

In my opinion, words don't matter too much. Your attitude is much more important. If you already apologized sincerely, I don't think she will blame you. And she actually had many chances to figure out that you didn't address her accurately. But she didn't. This shows that she is broad-minded.

Thank you,... she was not seemingly very upset, and did not even mention my apology. Thank you very much.
