About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am Irish living in UAE and will travel to Beijing on 24th December. Do I need a visa?

I land on 24th December 2pm from UAE and return to UAE at 11pm on 25th December.

Yes you need one.

To use the free transit policy you have to fly out to a third country, not back to the country of origin.
