About:China Visa Application Procedure and Fee

Which type of visa should I complete?

I am an Australian citizen and intend visiting Shanghai for one week in early December. My partner is currently working in Shanghai temporarily and I intend to stay at his residence (the school), which I completed on the application. My application was rejected and I was advised that I could only complete a Tourist L tyoe application if I could provide a hotel booking confirmation. I now have to provide a copy of my partners passport, a copy of his invitation letter from China, plus an invitation letter from him to me. I can get these documents, but I still don't know what type of application I need to complete? I don't know what category I come under if not as a tourist?

according to chinese embassy website it would appear to need to apply for category F type. you will need to have a look at the website to determine all the info that will be required. look at the section marked "instructions of visas for mainland china". hope that helps.
