Near the exit of the railway station, you may wait for a long time to hail a taxi, for there are many other passengers wanting to take taxi, too.

You are suggested to walk a little further from the rail station and then take one, that would be easier. Near the West lake scenic area, you can get taxis easily to the railway station, don’t worry.

My suggestion is to simply take the metro...the metro line 1 connects both major train stations (the new one-east rail station and the old one- "chengzhan") and passes right by the west lake. A number of stations are only a short walk from the West Lake (Dingan road, Longxiong Qiao, and Fengqi Road)...I would suggest Longxiang qiao, it's only about a 5 minute walk from the lake. The metro will save you money and the trouble of waiting for a taxi at the train station (which can take a long time at the East station)
