About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am a US citizen. If I enter on a 72-hour transit visa, can I then decide to extend it?

Payam, usually, you cannot extend it unless you cannot leave with 72 hours due to some special reason after entry such as flight cancellation. In that case, you need to apply for the relevant type to stay in PRC at the exit and entry administration department of the PSB.
