free visa for guangzhou to hong kong

Does the 72 hour free visa apply if I arrive in CAN via airline but depart within 24 hours via train to hong kong?

No. 72h visa-free transit is only for passengers who use airplanes both for arrival and departure. However, your transit is within 24h, so you are actually eligible for the 24h visa-free transit. After getting to CAN, go to the inspection counter of China Immigration Inspection to apply for 24h stay permit. With it, you can leave the airport and head for HK.
