do you have to submit a ticketinvitation letter ?

I'm a student in China, and my family member wants to visit me for 2 weeks. So does my family member have to submit the ticket or can I just provide an invitation letter ? or do does he have to submit both, airline ticket and invitation letter?

Generally speaking, he can submit either the round-trip airtickets and hotel reservations or an invitation letter from you. It's better that he can provide the invitation letter. By doing so, he doesn't have to book tickets too early.
