Tourist visa/ invitation letter

I have been informed by the reception at the sandton centre that I require an invitation letter to apply for a L type. Please clarify if this is correct information.

I am a tourist and have not been invited by anyone. I do have return tickets and accomodation booked.

Rachel, air ticket and accommodation booking are fine, according to the information provided on the website of Chinese embassy in your country. If possible, you might apply from the embassy directly rather than via an agent.
