What kinds of education were available to those who could afford it in the tang and song dynasty?

They had schools then. For Tang, the schools include Guozijian, Chongwenguan, Hongwenguan, and Taixue. For Song, academy (Shu Yuan) is the major type of schools, so many people went there for study.
