About:Dual Nationality

Can my baby be a chinese national?

I'm not chinese but my husband is. I'm currently pregnant and I'd like to go back to my country to have our baby since it's easier for me to be around my family, but we want our baby to have chinese nationality. Is it possible that our baby can be chinese, even if one of the parents (me) is not chinese and he will not be born in China?
thanks a lot for your help!

Sara, if you want your child to be a Chinese, then you shouldn't apply for him/her passport after birth. When you take him/her back to PRC, you should go to Chinese embassy to apply for a special travel document. And do not forget to get his/her birth certificate authenticated by the embassy. After your return, get his birth certificate translated into Chinese by qualified translation companies. Then your huband should take him/her to register her Hukou.

After you give birth to your baby, your husband who shall be a Chinese citizen shall bring your new born baby with his/her birth certificate (please refer to the relevant website of Chinese embassy on the requirements of acquiring a Chinese Passport for a new born baby) to apply for a Chinese Passport for your baby. When you obtain a passport of your baby, he/she will be granted a Chinese citizenship at that moment.
