I think you are framing the question incorrectly. Fireworks were probably more an accidental discovery - which were realized as way of signalling - superior to using flags/bonfires.
Gunpowder was also an accidental discovery then it was realized the energy could be directed through a tube - the beginning of gunpowder ballistics.
