Spencer, I should say that different people have different understandings of Kungfu. Some people practice Kungfu as a weapon to defeat or even kill others. To them, it's an act or violence. However, some others just develop and improve themselves by practicing Kungfu. These guys are really masters.

It's all the same, really mister Barkley. All is fair love and war. I am a lover not a fighter. I build with mine hands, not destroy. A means 2 an end, not too maim, but show compassion and honor toward thine enemy without demeanoring one's self by pride and hatred. To make a clean and quick kill. And not cause sufrage orto not prolong death. Thank you Father.Aman.

Because the essence of kung fu is figuratively to turn a piece of iron into a refined needle and self defence is only coincidental, of the least value like the little finger of your hand. Like the animal it take its spirit from, it also inherits its aggression as a last resort or to survive. Avoid rather than check, check rather than hurt, hurt rather than break and break rather kill. Peace be upon you.
