About:Chinese Consulate in Chicago

is it possible to go from hong kong into china just for the day? do i need a visa?

Jay, you mean to go from HK to mainland and then go back to HK? Even you just visit for a day, you need to get one entry permit in advance.

Does this mean that I have to buy a 10 year entry permit for $140 or is there a day entry permit available at the border?

Jay, you don't have to apply for the 10-year type, but you can't get the VOA at the border. I personally prefer to advise you to apply for a 10-year type, as the cost is the same as that of regular entry permits.
