About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

German passports: HK 25th- SHA 26th- HK 27th- Germany 28th, can do 72-hour Visa-free Transit?

My three friends who hold German passports, they are coming to visit Asia these days. The route is Tokyo Sept 18th—Kansai 19th- Hong Kong 25th- Shanghai 26th- Hong Kong27th- Germany 28th. So when he comes to Shanghai from Hong Kong on 26th, can he just show their return tickets to Hong Kong on 27th and Germany on 28th and get into Shanghai as 72-hour Visa-free Transit? Thanks.

Sorry, the 72-hour free transit does not apply to them. They fly from HK to Shanghai and then back to HK, so it's not considered as valid transit route, which in turn disqualifies them for using the free transit policy.

Even though they only stay for one night, the entry permit is needed. You can write an invitation letter to help them to apply for an L type. Alternatively, they can change their flight plan, for example, flying from Hong Kong to Shanghai and then to Germany or a third country.
