According to your situation, you don't need to have transit visa because your layover is within 24 hours. Just apply for a stay permit after landing and leave the airport.
You can make full use of this time to see the the Pearl River. In addition, Beijing Road Pedestrian Street is also highly recommended.
1. From the airport, take subway line 3 to Jiahe Wanggang Station and then transfer to line 2 to Haizhu Plaza Station. The duration is about 40 mins. It costs CNY 7 per person. After that, walk south to appreciate the beautiful scenery of Pearl River. You can also experience the cruise on the river.
2. From Haizhu Plaza to the Pedestrian Street, take subway line 2 to Gongyuanqian Station, Exit F. Then walk east along 5th Zhongshan Road around 400 yards. It takes around 5 mins with the fare of CNY 2 per person. Or you can just walk to the street within around 15min.
