I hope they are artificial leather and feathers. If so, there is no problem to take them in. Just take it easy!

No - I'm asking about REAL leather and feathers. I need to know if Customs will allow them or not. I don't want to have them taken away or destroyed at the border. And I also don't want to pay tons of Duty fees on them. So, I need to know before making plans.

If so, I do not suggest you take them. If you do not take leather and feathers made of precious animals, you still need to pay tax.

As I know it's ok to wear leather jacket. Have seen many people who have done it when travelled through China

It's not personal clothing, Jenni, but rather costumes for a theatrical production. We have several items either made of leather fully or partially, and use feathers for decoration on some hats. None of this is from endangered animals - just like classic leather jeans or simple decor on hats - but I'm just trying to learn if this is going to be a big problem. Paying some customs fees is possible, but I'm really hoping not to have to come up with completely new construction (which, for a short run in China, would be much more expensive).

So, you think probably customs fees, but not confiscation?

I see, Mary. My advice is to declare them at the customs. If they are not made of precious animals, they won't be confiscated.

Thanks, Jenni. Of course we'll have extensive customs declarations - there will be over 350 costumes (thousands of separate garment pieces) coming in, and my shipping documentation will be multi-page and highly detailed.

My biggest concern was having some of our stock taken away, destroyed, or otherwise denied entry. I'm trying to anticipate problems and determine whether I need to make any major changes in advance, before this all ships.

Many countries use a terminology like 'theatrical regalia' and, if the items are traveling on a carnet they're able to go in and out with more ease with the knowledge that it's a temporary importation and not for resale in the country in question. So far, in my investigation, China seems to be more restrictive.
