1. Shanghai to Wuhan by air. then train to XY east2. Shanghai to Zhengzhou then train to XY east3. would it be easier to take train to Wuhan and transfer to another train to XY. would it be same train station

Except the direct trains (K train), which takes around 13 hours, I suggest you ride a high speed train to Wuhan first and then transfer to another fast train to the destination. And yes, the arrival and departure stations are the same for transfer - Wuhan Railway Station.
