different between g84g488

Question

I'd like to know what's the different between G84 (2 digits number) and G488 (3 digits number)First I think the stop is different but I look some 2 digits number take more stops like 3 digits.

As a local friend told me, these code are just using for distinguish from each our, for different routes, office in charge etc. It has no influence for the ride or facilities or stops at all. You can just choose it based on your time, scheudle and the code do not matters.
